In his 60s and 70s, Henri Matisse, now famous, turned to mural decorations of striking scale and rigorous flatness. He composed these using techniques he himself invented, including painted cutouts. He explored printmaking techniques of all kinds, and he devised patterns for carpets and stained glass. Agnostic and frail, but determined to the end, he designed a luminous Catholic chapel.

Lecture Three Success-and a restless insistence, in the years between the wars, on going his own way-emboldened Henri Matisse to experiment with new styles, including Cubism. We look at his rediscovery of the Riviera, where for a decade he spent half the year portraying the secluded bliss of sunny rooms furnished with patterned fabrics and inhabited by female models, whether clothed or nude.

Encouraged by a few American and Russian patrons, and aided by his own production of drawings and sculpture, he created large figural compositions with imaginary settings.

Lecture One The 36-year-old Henri Matisse made a scandal in Paris exhibiting paintings with bright colors that no longer corresponded to the things they depicted. Hostile critics called this the world of “wild beasts,” or fauves. We trace Matisse’s earlier career and his breakthroughs in landscape, still life, and figural painting.
